Duo
Lance + one player
Two live players with the looper filling out the rhythm section. The leanest way to get the full groove — the right fit for smaller rooms and tighter budgets.
Lance Woodson & friends — instrumental neo jam, speakeasy groove
This is the band you book when the music is the point. Big Trip plays speakeasy groove — an instrumental neo jam band that brings the energy, holds the room's attention, and gives people a reason to come out and stay.
The set is about half originals and half covers, and the covers aren't played like the records. Songs like "Sweet Jane" and "Don't You Forget About Me" get rebuilt from the ground up as groovy, folk-rock jams, with the vocal lines carried by guitar, keys, or whoever has the melody that night — familiar enough to recognize, loose enough to go somewhere new every night.
Song forms and the setlist change from gig to gig. Each tune has a shape and a few landmark moments, and the rest is improvised — the band reads the room and follows it.
The lineup changes too. I play guitar or bass depending on who else is on the gig, and I draw on a rolodex of players from around the region. When a seat is empty, a looper covers that part — sparingly, so the live players are always the ones driving. More musicians means a bigger sound.

Lance + two players
Three live players and less looper. More room to trade solos, more push in the peaks, and a set that can go further from the map.
Four or more
Every seat filled with a live player and no looper at all. The full show — for festivals, speakeasies, patios, and rooms that want a proper night out.
